Edward B. Nassif

Edward B. Nassif, 90, of 81 Elliott Drive, and formerly of Holbrook Street, North Adams, died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.
He was president and owner of Nassif's Professional Pharmacy in North Adams, and served on a number of local and state boards.
Mr. Nassif served on the North Adams School Committee for 26 years, and was vice chairman for both the School Committee and the School Building Committee. He also served on the original McCann School Building Committee and was a North Adams City Councilor from 1949 to 1952.
Born in North Adams on June 26, 1913, son of George and Julia Thomas Nassif, he attended the former Mark Hopkins School and graduated from Drury High School. He earned his degree in pre-med from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he also received an invitation to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals.
He graduated from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston and later completed several graduate courses at Harvard Medical School. He returned to North Adams and moved to Williamstown in 1988.
Mr. Nassif took over his father's pharmacy after college and operated it until retiring in 1985, leaving the management to his son, Allen Nassif.
He was appointed to the state Board of Registration in Pharmacy from 1952 to 1960, and was re-appointed in 1974 to serve on its advisory committee. He was a member of the Massachusetts Pharmacy Association, American Pharmacy Association, National Association of Retail Druggists and National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.
He was a longtime member of First Congregational Church of North Adams. He was a past president of the North Adams Lions Club, a member of the BP&O Elks Lodge 487 in North Adams. He was a member of the Greylock Lodge of Masons for 60 years and sat on the board of the Salvation Army, both in North Adams.
He served on the Berkshire Bank & Trust Co. local advisory board for many years and was elected chairman in 1977. He was a director of the North Adams State College Foundation and the Vietnam Memorial Skating Rink in North Adams, and served on the board of the Berkshire chapter of the American Heart Association.

Besides his wife and his son, of Colchester, Vt., he leaves a daughter, Robin Nassif Whitney of Williamstown, and six grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service to celebrate the life of Edward B. Nassif, who died Dec. 15, 2003, will be conducted Saturday, with a 1:04 p.m. starting time, at First Congregational Church, North Adams, by the Rev. Jill Graham, pastor. There will be no calling hours.
Private burial will take place in the family plot in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for First Congregational Church of North Adams through the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St. North Adams.
Survivors include his wife Verne Allen Nassif; his daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Bruce Whitney; his son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Karen Richardson Nassif, and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister and two brothers, Eva Antil, Philip Nassif and Alfred Nassif.
