Belva Keyworth

Belva Keyworth, 89, of Williamstown Commons died Jan. 19 after a long illness.
She was the former owner of radio stations WBTN-AM and WHGC-FM in Bennington, Vt.
Born in Visalia, Calif., on Aug. 22, 1914, daughter of Harvey G. and Pearle Moran Chase, she was a graduate of Woodlake High School there. She also graduated from Central California Commercial College in Stockton, where she was elected "Ideal Secretary of California" by Alpha Iota Sorority.
During World War II, Mrs. Keyworth worked as a secretary in the Department of the Navy in Washington.
She and her husband, James Gordon Keyworth, were among the original stockholders of Catamount Broadcasters Inc., which was organized in 1951. The corporation began AM radio broadcasting from Bennington as WBTN in 1953.
They also worked in a number of radio stations in New England, including WNAN-WMNB in Pittsfield.
In 1971, Catamount Broadcasters, which she then owned solely, acquired an FM radio broadcast license from the FCC and began broadcasting WHGC-FM from Shaftsbury, Vt. She operated both stations until retiring in 1997. Radio stations WBTN-AM and WHGC-FM were sold to Vermont Public Radio in 2000.
An accomplished golfer, she played at Mount Anthony Country Club in Bennington and was a member of Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown.
She also played in Raleigh, N.C., where she owned a condominium.
Mrs. Keyworth was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, a member and active contributor to the Vermont Association of Broadcasters, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She leaves a brother, Lyle H. Chase of Fresno, Calif.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Memorial Service for Belva Chase Keyworth will be held Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, in Sherman Burbank Chapel at Eastlawn Cemetery in Williamstown.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make contributions to Vermont Public Radio or to St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown through the offices of MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
