Barbara Lesser, 75, of 405 North Hemlock Lane died Thursday at Lee Memorial Medical Systems Hospital in Fort Myers, Fla., of injuries sustained in an automobile accident Jan. 23 in Naples, Fla., that claimed the life of her husband, William Lesser II.
Born in Pittsburgh on July 6, 1928, daughter of Milton and Lillian Silverman Berkman, she graduated from Winchester Thurston School in Pittsburgh in 1946 and from Pennsylvania College for Women, now Chatham College, in 1950. She resided in New York City and Westchester County, N.Y., until moving to Williamstown in 1987. She spent winters in Naples.
Mrs. Lesser was an events coordinator for Viewpoints International in New York City. Before that, she was director of activities at Riverdale Country School in the Bronx, where students dedicated a yearbook to her.
She was president and founder of the Williamstown Theatre Festival Guild, volunteered on Saturdays at the information booth at the Clark Art Institute and was a member of the Williamstown Garden Club.
She also organized fund-raising events for the theater festival and the Clark Art. She helped create and write annual musicals at the Naples Bath and Tennis Club, including "Camp Run-A-Muck." As a child, she spent summers at camp in Maine.
She and her first husband, Stanley Roth Jr., whom she married in 1950, divorced in 1971.
She and her husband were married in 1975 in New York City.
She leaves a son, Steven Roth of Weston; a sister, Joni Ostrow of Pittsburgh, and two grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Barbara Lesser, who died Jan. 29, 2004, and William Lesser II will be held Sunday, Feb. 8, at noon at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. Condolences may be paid to Steven and Ellen Freeman Roth at 55 Sylvan Lane in Weston today, Feb. 3, and tomorrow, Feb. 4, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Barbara and William Lesser II Memorial Fund for arts and education through FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247. Survivors include her grandchildren, Joshua and Madeline Roth of Weston, and a niece and nephew.
Mrs. Lesser was admired in Williamstown, Naples and New York City for her ebullience, involvement with the arts, thoughtfulness, creativity and style.
