Helen G. Towne

Helen G. Towne, 86, of Stratton Road died yesterday at her daughter's home in Williamstown.

Born in Williamstown on May 22, 1917, daughter of Ernest and Crescent Goodermote Wright, she attended local schools and was a graduate of the former Williamstown High School.

In earlier years, Mrs. Towne was employed by the former Wall-Streeter Shoe Co. in North Adams.

For many years, she had been active in the operation of the family farm on Stratton Road.

An active member of First Baptist Church, she served as a Sunday school teacher and as superintendent of the Sunday school program.

She was also a member of the Lamplighters Club at the church. Mrs. Towne also enjoyed both gardening and canning.

She and her husband, Leland S. Towne Sr., were married in Williamstown on Oct. 7, 1939. He did Dec. 4, 1994.

She leaves two sons, David Allen Towne of Williamstown and Leland S. Towne Jr. of South Easton; a daughter, Marilyn T. Schlesinger of Williamstown; a sister, Evelyn Hodges of Statesville, N.C.; six grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Memorial services to celebrate the life of Helen G. Towne will be held at a time to be announced. There will be no calling hours. Should friends desire, contributions in Mrs. Helen G. Towne's memory may be made to either the VNA and Hospice of Northern Berkshire Inc., or First Baptist Church of Williamstown through the office of GEORGE M. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME, 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, MA 01267.

Mrs. Towne also leaves two daughters-in-law, Nancy of Williamstown and Judy of South Easton; a son-in-law, Richard Schlesinger; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Ernest Wright. Mrs. Towne will be fondly remembered as a farm wife and homemaker.
