Ernest Roy "Bud" Nicklien Sr., 74, of 342 Potter Road died yesterday at home.
Born in Williamstown on April 4, 1929, son of Walter and Bernice Hewes Nicklien, he attended local schools, including the Little Red School House in South Williamstown.
An Army veteran of the Korean War, he served from March 1951 to March 1953 as a private first class. He received many medals and commendations.
Mr. Nicklien was the foreman of the Williamstown Highway Department, retiring in 1992. He also worked for his late brother, Walter Nicklien, as a carpenter. He owned and operated Nicklien's Shell Gas and Service Station for 10 years, until 1972.
He also worked at Mount Hope Farm from 1957 to 1962, at the former Cornish Wire Co. and, before the war, at Eldridge Farm in South Williamstown
He was a longtime member of Second Congregational Church of South Williamstown, and was the first commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8304, from 1992 to 1995.
He leaves his wife, the former Virginia Jimmo, whom he married Oct. 19, 1957, in Second Congregational Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves five daughters, Betty Sylvester of Williamstown, Tina Bolner of North Adams, Misty Pitrovich of Stevens, Pa., and Rebecca Hassan and Lisa Spencer, both of Lanesboro; two sons, Ernest Roy Nicklien Jr. of Williamstown and Shawn Nicklien of Pownal, Vt.; a sister, Clare Burgermaster of Williamstown, and 13 grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services to celebrate the life of Ernest Roy "Bud" Nicklien Sr. will be conducted Tuesday at 11 at Second Congregational Church in South Williamstown by the Rev. Penny Rich Smith, pastor.
Burial with military honors will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, will be Monday from 6 to 9. Memorial donations are suggested for Second Congregational Church through the funeral home.
Survivors include 13 grandchildren. Mr. Nicklien was predeceased by three brothers, Walter, Arthur and William Nicklien, and a sister, Betty Ann Nicklien.
