Walter W. Schroeder Jr., 83, of 561 Green River Road died Sunday of respiratory failure at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Conn.
He had served on the Board of Health and the Planning and Zoning commissions.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Jan. 28, 1921, son of Walter and Mabel Schroeder, he was a graduate of White Plains (N.Y.) High School. He received his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 1943 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
During World War II, he served as a lieutenant in the Navy and was present on the USS Missouri in 1945 when Japan's representatives formally surrendered.
Mr. Schroeder was employed as an engineer by the former Sprague Electric Co., retiring in 1986 as director of corporate engineering. He was awarded numerous patents.
He also was director of the former Sprague Electric Credit Union and oversaw the construction of its new headquarters as Landmark Credit Union.
An avid golfer, he served on several membership committees at Taconic Golf Club. He won the club championship in 1953 and the senior men's club championship in 1971, 1979 and 1984. He enjoyed outdoor sports and was an accomplished hunter and fisherman.
He also served on the ski patrol at Bromley Mountain, Vt.
He and his wife, the former Virginia Wilson, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary March 4. They were married in Troy, N.Y.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Walter W. Schroeder III of Rowayton, Conn., and Robert Schroeder of North Granby, Conn.; a daughter, Gail Schroeder of Naugatuck, Conn., and six grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The family will hold a memorial gathering for Walter W. Schroeder, who died April 18, 2004, at the Williams Inn on Friday, May 14, from 4 to 6. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Lung Association, 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006.
He leaves his grandchildren Walter Schroeder IV of Rowayton, Carson Schroeder of New York City, Elizabeth, Stephanie and Steven Schroeder of North Granby, and Joey Annichiarico of Naugatuck.
