Charles Edward Hoppin

Charles Edward Hoppin, 85, of 1611 Cold Spring Road, formerly of Summit, N.J., died Wednesday at North Adams Regional Hospital.
He moved to Williamstown last year. He was the father of Meredith C. Hoppin of Williamstown.
Born in Northfield, Minn., on June 10, 1918, son of Claude and Elinor Hallowell Hoppin, he was raised in Glasgow and Great Falls, Mont., where he graduated from high school.
He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Carleton College in Northfield in 1940 and a master's degree in history from the University of Minnesota in 1941. The following year, he attended New York University and, while there, was a Penfield Fellow and instructor in history.
During World War II, he worked for the Food Distribution Administration. After the victory in Europe, he worked for the York State Veterans Administration.
He was last employed by the Consolidated Edison Co. in New York City, retiring in 1981 after 29 years of service. While at Consolidated, he served as director of public information from 1961 to 1966, and then was in customer service, where he was responsible for training employees in computer use.
He also taught history at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, from 1948 to 1951.
He was an avid gardener.
His wife, the former Jean Searing, whom he married Sept. 2, 1949, died May 24, 2003.
Besides his daughter, he leaves a stepson, Michael S. Moore of Veazie, Maine; a stepdaughter, Melinda Moore Pick of Summit, and four grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- At his request, there will be no funeral services. The family suggests that those who wish may make memorial donations to Calvary Church Building Fund, Summit, NJ, or to a charity of the donor's choice through the AUGE-SAN SOUCIE FUNERAL HOME, 46 North Church St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.
He leaves his grandchildren, Demian Moore, Tanya Moore, Christopher Langston and Elizabeth Langston. A brother, Richard H. Hoppin, and a sister, Elinor H. Hoffman, are deceased.
