William Martin Oakman

William Martin Oakman, 81, doctor of chiropractic, of 134 Riverside Drive died Sunday at home.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 31, 1923, son of William C. and Caroline Caso Oakman, he moved to Chicago as a child and attended schools there. He returned to New York City and graduated from Jamaica High School in 1941.

He also graduated from North Carolina University in Raleigh, N.C., in 1948 with a bachelor of science degree in business marketing and manufacturing and obtained his doctorate in 1957 from New York School of Chiropractic Medicine in basic science and surgical medical techniques.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the medical ski patrol 289th Engineering Combat Battalion, providing surgical care and treatment to patients. He received several campaign medals.

A self-employed chiropractor on Long Island, N.Y., for many years, Mr. Oakman retired in 1974 and moved to Williamstown, where he was employed as the Williamstown area insurance agent for Prudential Insurance Co. He also worked as a mobile home salesman in the area and was a member of the sales force for the Wheel Estates Mobile Home project in North Adams. He was last employed part time at the Massachusetts Department of Employment and Training in North Adams as a job replacement adviser.

He was a longtime volunteer for the Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice of Northern Berkshire, where he received several awards for his dedication to the mission of hospice care.

He also was a member of the Williamstown Council on Aging, the Williamstown Friendship Club at the Harper Center, the Milne Public Library and the Williams College Museum of Art and the Clark Art Institute.

A volunteer for Elder Services of Northern Berkshire and the Williamstown Historical Society, he was active on several committees at The Spruces mobile home park.

His wife, the former Barbara Irene Gaylord, died Oct. 3, 1990.

He leaves his fiancée, Jean Bachand of Williamstown.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Dr. William Martin Oakman will be celebrated Thursday at 11 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown by the Rev. Peter Elvin, rector.

Burial with full military honors will follow in the family plot in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations are suggested for VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire or to the David & Joyce Milne Public Library through FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME for FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St. North Adams, Ma.

Survivors include his fiancée, Jean Bachand of Williamstown.
