Mary Lewis, 83, of Sweetwood Continuing Care Community died Tuesday at home.
Born in Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands, on Feb. 15, 1921, daughter of Navy Capt. Owen J. Mink and Grace Clifford Mink, she attended schools where her father was stationed, including in Illinois, American Samoa and the Philippines.
She graduated in 1938 from Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Md., and, in 1942, from Smith College in Northampton, to which she had received a scholarship. After her marriage, she had resided in Tenafly, N.J., until moving to Williamstown in 1975.
Mrs. Lewis had assisted her husband, R. Craigin Lewis, in his position as director of alumni relations for Williams College for 11 years. She also had worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. in New York City, then for the Navy Department in Washington.
She was an avid patron of the opera, a bird watcher and a gardener. She was a volunteer at the Women's Exchange and at the annual Smith College book sale, and a member of the Friday Club.
She also was a supporter, with her husband, of the Williamstown Rural Lands Foundation.
Her husband, whom she married Jan. 10, 1946, died Feb. 5, 2001.
She leaves a brother, Robert Owen Mink, and a sister, Margaret Mink Anderson, both of Atlantic Beach, Fla.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service will be conducted for Mary Mink Lewis on Friday, June 25, at 10:30 in Thompson Memorial Chapel, Williams College, preceded by an interment service at Williams College Cemetery on Lynde Lane.
There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mary and Craig Lewis Center for Nature and Rural Heritage at the Williamstown Rural Lands Foundation or to the Women's Exchange on Cole Avenue.
