Mary W. Lawrence, 91, of 80 South St. died Monday at Southwestern Medical Center in Bennington, Vt.
She had lived in Williamstown for 44 years.
Born in Los Angeles on Nov. 5, 1912, daughter of Paul S. and Irene L. Biggs Wood, she earned a bachelor of arts degree from Grinnell College and a master of arts degree from Stanford University.
While at Stanford, she met and married Nathaniel M. Lawrence, whose subsequent doctoral work at Harvard took the couple to the Boston area, where she served as an editor at the Atlantic Monthly.
A teacher, Mrs. Lawrence taught English and writing at a variety of colleges and secondary schools around the country, including Pine Cobble School and Berkshire Community College.
A traveler and explorer, she lived in Paris, Vienna, Austria, and Kyoto, Japan, backpacking extensively in Asia, Europe and all the major mountain ranges of the United States well into her 80s.
Her passion for informed conversation persisted until shortly before her death. She studied natural and world history, archaeology, many languages and the arts.
Her husband died in 1986.
She leaves a daughter, Mary Ellen Lawrence of Corvallis, Ore.; two sons, Nathaniel S. Lawrence of Olympia, Wash., and Roger T.W. Lawrence of Williamstown, and four grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service celebrating the life of Mary Lawrence will take place Sunday, June 20, at 2 at St. John's Episcopal Church on Park Street in Williamstown.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Mary and Nathaniel Lawrence Traveling Fellowship, by check made out to Williams College and addressed to the attention of Diana Elvin, Williams College, 75 Park St., Williamstown, MA 01267. The fellowship makes it possible for others to share Mary's delight in expanding her understanding of the world through travel.
