Dorothy H. Becker

Dorothy H. Becker, 85, of Sweetwood retirement community died yesterday morning at home.

Born in New York City on Dec. 30, 1918, daughter of Nathan L. and Rose Zeitlin Goldstein, she was educated there and earned her bachelor of arts degree from Mount Holyoke College. She completed both her master's degree in social work and her doctorate in social welfare at Columbia University.

Mrs. Becker taught social work at the undergraduate and graduate levels at Barnard and Hunter colleges and at New York and Bar-Ilan universities.

She served on the board of trustees of Reconstructionist Rabinical College and, in recognition of her dedication and support, was awarded an honorary degree of Keter Shem Tov (Crown of the Good Name), which is bestowed upon those of academic and communal distinction.

She was a dedicated Zionist and, in partnership with her husband, Sidney B. Becker, contributed to organizations in Israel and the United States that promoted the long-term survival of the Jewish people. She also championed the rights of the poor.

A supporter of the arts and culture, she devoted herself to painting in her later years.

Her husband died Jan. 15, 2000.

She leaves three sons, Dr. Daniel I. Becker of Williamstown, William P. Becker of Wynnewood, Pa., and David M. Becker of Bethesda, Md., 10 grandchildren and a great-grandaughter.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Dr. Dorothy H. Goldstein Becker, who died June 27, 2004, will be tomorrow, June 29, at 9:30 at "The Riverside," West 76th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, New York City.

Burial will follow in Cedar Park Cemetery, Westwood, N.J. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory are suggested for Congregation Beth Israel of North Adams, Mass., through FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of local arrangements.

Dr. Becker will be remembered as a woman of remarkable insight, insatiable intellectual curiosity and unfailing wit and charm. She was the loving grandmother of 10, Sarah, Samuel, Anne, James, Leslie, Michael, Ruth, Benjamin, Rachel and Jordan, and of a newborn great-granddaughter.
