Elizabeth Agnes Neyland

July 24, 2004

Elizabeth Agnes Neyland, 87, of 685 Main St. died Saturday at Sweet Brook Health Care Centers.

Born in Williamstown on Oct. 28, 1916, daughter of John B. and Catherine Maher Neyland, she was a 1934 graduate of the former Williamstown High School, a graduate of the former North Adams State Teachers College and pursued graduate studies at Columbia University in New York City.

Miss Neyland was a teacher at the former Pittsfield School for Crippled Children, and taught English at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., and at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

She spent the majority of her career as a teacher in the Nyack (N.Y.) Public School System.

She enjoyed tennis, hiking, bird watching, cross country skiing and traveling.

She was also a volunteer for Recording for the Blind and was involved in local environmental projects.

She leaves two sisters, Marjorie Neyland of South Hadley and Margaret "Peggy" Altmann of Williamstown.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Private graveside services for Elizabeth Agnes Neyland will take place in the family plot in Westlawn Cemetery, Williamstown, Mass. There will be no calling hours. FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St., North Adams, Mass., is in charge of arrangements.

She also leaves two brothers-in-law, Curtis Callan of Hightstown, N.J., and Eberhart Altmann of Williamstown; a sister-in-law, Carroll Neyland of Webster, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews, including Ginny Sheldon and her husband, Tom, of Williamstown; and grand- and great--grandnieces and -nephews, including Andrew Sheldon and his family of Williamstown.

Betty was a teacher at heart and shared her love for and knowledge of the outdoors and the natural world with each succeeding generation of children in her extended family.
