Geraldine Francis

Geraldine S. Francis, 83, of 1561 Cold Spring Road, formerly of 71 Pine St., Pittsfield, died Monday at Sweetbrook Care Center, where she had resided for two years.

Born in Boston on Dec. 22, 1917, daughter of Beverly and Ethel Hardy Smith, she graduated from high school in Boston.

Mrs. Francis learned the piano at age 2 from her father and aunt, and became an accomplished pianist. She was well known in theaters, off-Broadway shows and clubs in New York City as a jazz pianist from 1940 to 1978. She also toured with the USO during World War II overseas.

In 1978, she moved to Pittsfield and was employed by Berkshire Advocates for the Disabled, retiring in 1987. She was also a pianist at Oak 'N Spruce during that time.

She leaves three daughters, Paula Kelsey of Adams, LaVaughn Davis of Queens, N.Y., and Joyce Diamond of Sacramento, Calif.; two sons, Marvin Scott and Gene Smith, both of New York City; nine grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Saturday at 6 p.m. at WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield, with the Rev. Willard Durant officiating. Following cremation, burial will be at the convenience of the family in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be on Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m.
