John Joseph Gravel

John Joseph Gravel, 64, of 237 White Oaks Road died Sunday at home after a long illness.
Born in North Adams on Feb. 21, 1940, son of John H. and Rose H. Jeffers Gravel, he was raised in Williamstown and was a 1958 graduate of the former Williamstown High School, where he was a star athlete in football, basketball and baseball.
A Navy veteran, he served on the USS Franklin Roosevelt in the Mediterranean and with the Seabees from 1958 to 1964. He achieved the rank of first-class seaman.
Mr. Gravel was employed as a printer and layout specialist at Excelsior Printing Co. in North Adams, retiring in 2002. He also had worked for Excelsior for 11 years after his military service, then joined the family business, Williamstown Roofing Co., serving as its president until 1986.
He was a longtime member of Richard Ruether Post 152 American Legion, and a member for several years of the Greylock Community Club in North Adams.
He was a fan of the New England Patriots, and enjoyed bird watching and the beauty of open oceans, lakes and rivers.
He leaves his former wife, Prudence Gravel of North Adams; a daughter, Robin Bleezarde of Mount Arlington, N.J.; two sons, John J. Gravel Jr. of Clarksburg and Brian C. Gravel of Williamstown, and 10 grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services to celebrate the life of John Joseph Gravel, who died Oct. 31, 2004, will be conducted Wednesday at 2 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, by the Rev. Peter Daniels, pastor of First Baptist Church of Williamstown.
Burial with full military honors will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown. At Mr. Gravel's request, there will be no calling hours. Memorial donations are suggested to the American Heart Association through the funeral home.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Claire Gravel; a son-in-law, Eric Bleezarde; 10 grandchildren, Lee H., Celeste and Olivia Gravel, and Amanda, Matthew, Ryan, Benjamin, Rachel, Johanna and Sarah Bleezarde. His sister, Mary Gravel, died in infancy.
