Ruth Evelyn Jayne, 97, of 58 Champagne Ave., The Spruces, died yesterday at Williamstown Commons, where she had been admitted in August.
Born in North Adams on Nov. 15, 1906, the daughter of John and Rhoda Green Greene, she was a 1925 graduate of Drury High School.
Mrs. Jayne was last employed as a cashier at the former North Adams Hospital from 1932 to 1942. Earlier, she had worked in the payroll office of the former James Hunter Machine Co. for several years.
She moved to Williamstown in 1979.
She was an 84-year member of the First Baptist Church in North Adams, where she taught Sunday school, was superintendent of the kindergarten department for many years, served on the board of Christian education and as the church assistant treasurer. She was also a member and past president of the former Priscilla Club.
She also sang in the choir for many years. Mrs. Jayne was also a member of the Naomi Chapter 17, Order of Eastern Star, receiving her 50-year pin in 1980. She was a volunteer worker in the gift shop at North Adams Regional Hospital.
At the Spruces, she served on the board of directors and as a street captain for one year. She was a member of the Friendship Club.
Her husband, Floyd E. Jayne, whom she married June 25, 1932, died March 3, 1991.
She leaves a daughter, Judith McManama of Williamstown, two grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Ruth Jayne will be Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at 2 in the First Baptist Church, North Adams. The Rev. Joseph DeCosta, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 4 at the AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund through the funeral home, 46 North Church St., 01247. She leaves her son-in-law, John; brother-in-law, Richard Irwin of Latham, N.Y.; two grandsons, Jason Carey of Chicago and Jarod Carey of Los Angeles; two great-granddaughters, Sedona and Jaiden Carey; five nieces, Carole Dolan and her husband Peter, and Elva Lewis, all of Williamstown, Heather Irwin of Latham, Jane Thompson of Westboro and Betty Mancuso of Leesburg, Fla., and many great-great-nieces and nephews.
A sister, Elva McKay, and a brother, Wallace Greene, are deceased.
