Howard Albert Davis

Howard Albert Davis, 89, of 49 Jamieson Heights died Saturday at Sweet Brook Transitional Care and Living Center, where he had resided since Dec. 19.

Born in Lima, Ohio, on May 19, 1915, son of Leo Albert and Marie Homolka Davis, he graduated from South High School in Columbus. He earned a bachelor of science degree and a master's degree in organic chemistry from Ohio State University.

Mr. Davis moved to Williamstown in 1952 to work for the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams in the research and development department. In the early 1970s, he joined the chemistry department lab at Williams College, from which he retired.

He was a longtime member of Second Congregational Church of South Williamstown, where he was a lifetime deacon. He also taught Sunday school, was secretary of the Church Council, and the dedicated coffee maker for church functions.

Also an active member of the Williamstown community, he volunteered at the Chamber of Commerce Tourist Information Booth and served on the board of the Council on Aging for many years.

He was also a volunteer with TRIAD and a member of the Williamstown Ecumenical Association and the Proprietor's Field Bridge Club.

He was a talented flutist and also enjoyed football, hiking and jogging.

He was a member of the American Chemical Society and Sigma Rho Chi. He won the Arnold H. Scott Award for outstanding work in the chemical field from the American Society of Testing and Materials.

He and his wife, the former Mary Williams, would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Feb. 24. They were married in Toledo, Ohio.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Margaret Allison Davis of Moscow, Idaho, and Annie Archambault of Plymouth; a son, Roger William Davis of Williamstown, who resided with his parents; a sister, Ruth Kennedy of Athol, Idaho, and three grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Memorial services for Howard A. Davis will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at 11 at Second Congregational Church, 81 Hancock Road, South Williamstown, by the Rev. Penny Rich Smith, pastor. Burial will be in Southlawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the Second Congregational Church of Williamstown through FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include a son-in-law, Larry Wisocki; grandchildren, Bree Archambault, Bear Archambault and Leslie Wisocki; sister-in-law, Marion Davis; nephew, Richard Davis; great-niece, Libby Davis; great-nephew, Chris Davis, and former son-in-law, Jack Archambault. He was predeceased by brothers Leo Davis and Duane Davis. He was often seen jogging and hiking the streets of Williamstown.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather to his family.
