Howard D. Oakes, 82

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Howard D. Oakes, 82, of 29 Danforth St. died Monday evening, March 7, 2005, at North Adams Regional Hospital.

Born on the family farm in Readsboro, Vt., on June 2, 1922, son of Clifford E. Oakes Sr. and Adelaide Lillian Tower Oakes, he attended schools in South Readsboro, Vt.

A decorated Army veteran of World War II, he served in five major battles, including the Battle of the Bulge, the Rhineland and in Central Europe, with Gen. George Patton's forces.

Mr. Oakes was employed in the buildings and grounds department at Williams College, retiring in 1984. He first worked for the former Hoosac Tunnel & Wilmington Railroad (known as the Hoot Toot & Whistle) for several years, and then for Raymond Hathaway Logging Co. in Monroe. He also worked at Mount Hope Farm.

He was 42-year member of Richard A. Ruether Post 152 American Legion, where he was a past commander and sergeant of arms. He also was a member of VFW Post 8304.

He and his wife, the former Nora "Peggy" Blake Boschetti, were married in June 1960.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Beverly Haley of Williamstown; a son, David Boschetti of Pinellas Park, Fla.; two sisters, Marion Snow of Monroe and Mildred Caprari of Clarksburg; a brother, Douglas E. Oakes Sr. of Monroe, nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two sons, James Oakes on Sept. 5, 1980, and Lawrence Thomas Boschetti on Sept. 24, 1997, and by two brothers, Clifford E. Oakes Jr. on July 19, 1983, and Richard F. Oakes on Oct. 29, 1999.

FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mr. Oakes will be conducted Friday at 11 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, by the Rev. Penny Rich Smith, pastor of Second Congregational Church of South Williamstown.

Burial with full military honors will follow in the family plot in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 8 at the funeral home. Memorial donations are suggested for the Williamstown American Legion or VFW posts through the funeral home.
