Raymond Gene Yoakum

Raymond Gene Yoakum, 74, of 78 Candlewood Drive died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born in St. Louis on Oct. 30, 1930, son of Raymond I. and Gertrude Gunier Yoakum, he attended schools there and graduated from Lodi (Calif.) High School.

He moved to Williamstown in 1999.

He served in the Air Force as a private, first class.

Mr. Yoakum was the owner and operator of Yoakum Carpet Co. in Tracy, Calif. He earlier had worked for several years at Accent Carpet Co., also in Tracy.

He was past vice president and officer of the Lions Club in Tracy.

An avid NASCAR fan, he had raced hardtop race cars in the 1960s in California.

He and his wife, the former Donna L. Woods, celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary Feb. 2. They were married in Reno, Nev.

Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Terri Nelson of Williamstown, Lorri Heibert of Sacramento, Calif., and Sherri Smith of Dallas; two brothers, William Yoakum and Ronald Yoakum, both of Sacramento, Calif.; a sister, Rosemary VanDyke of Lodi, and three grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service to celebrate the life of Raymond G. Yoakum, who died March 14, 2005, will take place at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours.

Memorial donations are suggested for the charity of the donor's choice through FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams.

Survivors include three grandchildren, Sheenan Heibert, Samantha Heibert and Daniel Raymond Smith.
