William DeWitt Horrocks Sr.

William DeWitt Horrocks Sr., 95, died Thursday at North Adams Regional Hospital.
A resident of Sweet Brook Care Centers, in recent years he had lived in retirement facilities in Vero Beach, Fla., and Pittsfield.
Born on March 13, 1910, in St. Davids, Pa., son of Henry Havelock and Jessica Stinson Horrocks, he attended Episcopal Academy in Merion, Pa. He was reared in Philadelphia, but spent two years living with his family in Europe prior to World War I.
During the Depression years, Mr. Horrocks worked at a number of jobs including salesman, chicken farmer and service station operator. He took night classes in drafting and was hired as a jig designer to work on Grumman aircraft at the Fleetwings defense plant in Bristol, Pa., during World War II.
Following the war, he and his family settled in Moorestown, N.J. After a brief period serving as foreman at two small manufacturing plants in New Jersey, he joined the technical staff of the University of Pennsylvania, serving as head of the drafting department of the Moore School of Electrical Engineering, from which he retired in 1972.
He and his wife then moved to Stuart, Fla., where he became interested in flying radio-controlled model airplanes. He belonged to the Martin County Modelers, the Treasure Coast Aero Modelers and the SunDancers RC flying clubs.
A sailing and cruising enthusiast, he was recently made an honorary life member of the Island Heights (N.J.) Yacht Club. In summers, he and his wife cruised the coastal waters from Nantucket to the Chesapeake Bay. They ventured as far as Maine, Florida and the Bahamas.
On April 8, 1932, he married the former Lucille Gutmann, whom he met in Island Heights. She died of Alzheimer's disease in 1989.
He leaves a son, William Horrocks Jr. of State College, Pa.; a daughter, Anne Crider of Williamstown; three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for William Dewitt "Bill" Horrocks will be held in the Island Heights, N.J., area in the summer. Memorial Donations are suggested for the American Red Cross through Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247.
Survivors include three grandchildren, Juliet Crider of Bellingham, Wash., Allan Horrocks of San Francisco and Jonathan Crider of New York City, as well as a great-granddaughter, Lucille Crider Steig.
