Vincent DeMayo, 91, formerly of 74 Elm St., died early yesterday morning at the home of his daughter, Judith Clarno at 231 East Road, Adams.
Born in Volturara, province of Avellino, Italy, on Nov. 23, 1913, son of Antonio and Maria Cosiglis Santoro DeMeo, he came to the United States at the age of 7 aboard the Duca degli Abruzzi with his family, settling in North Adams, where he attended school.
Mr. DeMayo was employed for many years by New Balance Shoe Co. in Watertown. He was proud to have been chosen to cut one of the company's first pairs of sneakers.
He was a communicant of the Parishes of St. Raphael and St. Patrick and a member of the Harper Center.
He was a gardener and enjoyed fishing in the Deerfield River.
His wife, the former Julia Posato, whom he married May 26, 1951, in Watertown, died March 19, 2003.
Besides his daughter, he leaves a son, James V. DeMayo of West Stockbridge; two sisters, Angela Maria Marlow of Clarksburg and Pasqualina Maria Matrigali of North Adams; five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Ann M. Dellert, died June 13, 2003.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Vincent DeMayo will be celebrated Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at 10 at Our Lady of Mercy Church on State Road in North Adams. Burial will follow in the family lot in Eastlawn Cemetery in Williamstown.
Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, will be Wednesday from 8:30 to 9:30. Donations may be made to VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire in care of the funeral home.
Survivors include five grandchildren, Joseph DeMayo, Andrea DeMayo, Karen Richert, Kathy Kothlow and Kara Ottone, and nieces and nephews. A brother, Natalino DeMeo, died July 18, 1969.
