William H. Northup, 86

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — William H. Northup, 86, of 35 Adams Road died Monday, June 6, 2005, at North Adams Regional Hospital.

He was vice president and loan officer at the former Williamstown National Bank for many years.

Born in Williamstown on Dec. 21, 1918, son of William and Harriet Gardner Northup, he was a 1937 graduate of the former Williamstown High School, where he was captain of the varsity football, basketball and baseball teams.

In 1937, he was selected by the Republican of Springfield to the All-Western Massachusetts baseball team as the top shortstop. Following high school, Mr. Northup played semiprofessional baseball for Williamstown American Legion Post 152.

He graduated from the Williams College school of banking.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a staff sergeant with Battery C, the 737th Anti-aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion in the South Pacific. He received several campaign medals.

Mr. Northrup was first employed by Mount Hope Farm for several years. He retired from banking in the late 1970s.

He was a former member of the Williamstown Lions Club and a member of Richard Ruether Post 152 American Legion. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing golf and was a member of Taconic Golf Club and Waubeeka Golf Links.

Mr. Northup was a respected and private member of his community.

He and his wife, the former Priscilla M. Windover, would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary Aug. 17. They were married at First Baptist Church in North Adams.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, William H. Northup Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Shelburne, Vt.; a daughter, Susan E. Pedercini of Williamstown; a sister, Bertha Young and her husband, Richard, and two grandchildren, Nicole "Nikki" Pedercini and William H. "Will" Northup III

He was predeceased by two sisters, Grace Norman and Ruth Lancto, and by his brother, Horace Northup.

FUNERAL NOTICE — Private graveside services for Mr. Northup will be conducted at the family plot in Southview Cemetery, North Adams, by the Rev. Dr. Pat Mac Hugh, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Williamstown.

There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations are suggested for North Adams Regional Hospital or to Village Ambulance through Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St. North Adams.
