Curtis Gove Callan Sr

Curtis Gove Callan Sr., 88, of Hightstown, N.J., died Saturday at Meadow Lakes Retirement Community.
He was the father of Virginia Callan Sheldon of Williamstown.
Born in Staten Island, N.Y., son of Lester Lawrence and Catherine Cutler Gove Callan, he was a graduate of Staten Island Academy. He was also a 1939 graduate of Williams College.
He lived in Little Silver, N.J., for 41 years before moving to Hightstown in 1999.
A Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he was a member of the first officer candidates class in Quantico, Va., and marched in President Roosevelt's inaugural parade. He served in the Pacific theater, followed by service in the Marine Corps Reserves from 1945 to 1957.
Mr. Callan was employed by Chase Manhattan Bank in the credit and trust departments, retiring as a vice president in 1982.
He served on the boards of Little Silver Public Library and the Little Silver and Red Bank regional schools.
An avid reader of history, biographies and the classics, he also enjoyed world traveling, walking and bird watching.
His wife of 59 years, the former Frances R. Neyland of Williamstown, died May 15, 2001.
Besides his daughter, he leaves a son, Curtis G. Callan Jr. of Princeton; another daughter, Anne Callan Cunningham of Rocky Mount, N.C.; a sister, Margaret Callan Howell Welch of Evanston, Ill, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Memorial Service for Curtis Gove Callan Sr. will take place at a later date, followed by burial at Westlawn Cemetery in Williamstown. Arrangements are by the MOORE FUNERAL HOME, 371 Lakehurst Road, Browns Mills, N.J.
He leaves his sons-in-law, Thomas of Williamstown and Scott of Rocky Mount; a daughter-in-law, Chantal; four sisters-in-law, Helen Callan of Hightstown, Margaret Altmann of Williamstown, Marjorie Neyland of South Hadley and Carroll Neyland of Webster, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Benedicte Callan and Ethan Kapstein of Paris, France, Dominique Callan and Kathy Leahy of New York City, Thomas and Jeanine Sheldon of Collegeville, Pa., Andrew and Lisa Sheldon of Williamstown, Matthew and Lisa Sheldon of West Chester, Pa., Andrew, Daniel and John Isaac Cunningham of Rocky Mount; seven great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Mia, Zavi, Anya and Sylvia Sheldon, Nina Kapstein and Nicholas Callan, and six nieces and three nephews.
