H. Norton Schell

H. Norton Schell, 93, formerly of 90 Candlewood Drive, died May 14 at Willowood Health Care Center.
Born in North Adams on June 20, 1907, son of Harlan P. and Elizabeth Horton Schell, he graduated from Drury High School in 1927 and from Williams College in 1931.
He was a World War II Army veteran, serving with the Medical Department 225th Station Hospital in Italy and the European campaigns as a private first class.
Mr. Schell owned and operated the former Schell Memorials on South Church Street in North Adams, a firm established in 1900 by his father. In 1931, he became a partner and, after his father's death in 1933, became sole owner. He was assisted by his wife, the former Marion Spencer, until it was sold in 1969 and they retired.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church of North Adams, where he taught Sunday school for several years. While a resident of Williamstown, he was a member of First Congregational Church. He was a longtime member of the Williams College Faculty House, a former trustee of Hoosac Bank in North Adams and a former member of the Northern Berkshire Chamber of Commerce.
His wife, whom he married Feb. 5, 1935, died Sept. 13, 1992.
Graveside services will be Thursday morning, June 7, at 11 at the family plot in Southview Cemetery, North Adams, with the Rev. Peter Elvin, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church of Williamstown, and the Rev. Carrie Ball, pastor of First Congregational Church of Williamstown, officiating. There will be no calling hours.
