Charles Hadley Samler King Jr.

Charles Hadley Samler King Jr., 78, of 84 Moorland St., a retired bank officer and lawyer, died Sunday at home.
He was a member of the Conservation Commission.
Born in Baltimore on Jan. 1, 1927, son of Charles Hadley Samler King Sr. and Marjorie Primrose King, he graduated from Long Branch (N.J.) High School in 1944.
He entered the Navy that summer, joining the V-12 program at Williams College. He went into an ROTC program at Yale, returning to Williams classes after his 1946 separation from active duty. He graduated in June 1947, one of the 12 commencements at which members of the class of 1948 concluded college. He also graduated from Fordham University Law School.
Mr. King began a career in finance with Chemical Bank in New York City, later working for Merck & Co. and American Metal Co. while attending Fordham at night. After passing the New York bar exam, he joined the Wall Street law firm of Gifford, Woody, Carter and Hayes, where he remained for 18 years. In 1972, he joined North Carolina National Bank, which later became NationsBank, in Charlotte, N.C., and in 1978 moved to First Tennessee Trust in Nashville, Tenn. He retired in 1990 and moved to Williamstown in 2001.
He was active in community theaters and had long been a volunteer for Williams College, serving early terms as 1948's class president and agent. He later served on his class's 50th-reunion fund committee and was an annual fund vice chairman for the college. At the time of death, he was class agent and vice chairman of the alumni fund, and a member of the reunion committee.
He was a former councilman in Fair Haven, N.J.
His wife, the former Joan Thomas of Jersey City, N.J., died in May 2000.
He leaves two sons, Thomas King of Monroe, N.C., and Andrew King of Wilmington, N.C.; a daughter, Barbara King of Spruce Pine, N.C.; a brother, Richard C. King of Monmouth Hills, N.J.; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Davies of Michigan and Marjorie A. Lang of Eaton Town, N.J., and seven grandchildren. He also leaves his companion, Marilyn Ellingwood, with whom he made his home. Another son, Charles Hadley Samler King III, died in August 1992.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Memorial Service to Celebrate the life of Chuck King will be held Friday, July 15, 2005, at 11 at Thompson Memorial Chapel on the Williams College campus. Burial will be private.

A brother, James C. King, is deceased.
