Virginia Scribner

Virginia Scribner, 88, of Sweetwood Continuing Care Community died there Friday.
Born in Cleveland on Aug. 6, 1917, daughter of Ezra G. and Ruth Bergetta Syverson Wilkinson, she received a bachelor of fine arts degree in drama in 1938 from Ohio Wesleyan University, becoming the first person in her family to earn a college degree.
She moved to Williamstown in 1999.
While raising a family, she also pursued a career as an elementary school teacher in Hudson, Ohio, where she lived for 30 years. She was active in the Hudson Players and the Hudson Garden Club.
In the mid-1970s, she and her husband, Edward E. Scribner Jr., founded Scribner Realty. They retired in 1982 and moved to Shaftsbury, Vt.
Mrs. Scribner worked as a volunteer at the Park-McCullough House in North Bennington, Vt. She also studied ornithology at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and became an official tracker of migratory patterns of birds in Vermont.
At the time of his death in January 2000, she and her husband had been married almost 60 years.
She leaves a son, David E. Scribner of Pittsfield; a daughter, Sally Williamson McCreary of Opelika, Ala.; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Virginia Wilkinson Scribner, who died Aug. 19, 2005, will be held Oct. 2 at Sweetwood at a time to be announced.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to a humane society of their choice through the office of GEORGE M. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME, 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, MA 01267. Survivors include four grandchildren, Isaac Julian Scribner, James Uertz, Kristen Bowden and Allison Nealy, and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a grandson, Jonathan David Scribner.
