James E. Godfrey Sr.

James E. Godfrey Sr., 80, of 580 Henderson Road died Saturday at North Adams Regional Hospital.
Born in Williamstown on Jan. 11, 1925, son of Archie and Bessie Davis Godfrey, he was a 1942 graduate of the former Williamstown High School.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a private with Company D, 601st Military Police Battalion.
Mr. Godfrey owned and operated Godfrey Horse Stables, where he trained his horses for races at the former Green Mountain Race Track and at the Saratoga Harness Track in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
He was employed by Ashley Swift & Sons Co. in North Adams for 15 years before his retirement. Earlier, he was a union pipefitter with Local Union 104 in Springfield for many years.
He was a member of White Oaks Congregational Church, a longtime member of Richard Ruether Post 152 American Legion and a former member of the winter bowling league at Valley Park Bowling Lanes in North Adams. He also enjoyed gardening.
His wife, the former Dora M. Blake, whom he married Jan. 15, 1954, in Charlemont, died Jan. 11, 1967.
He leaves a son, James E. Godfrey Jr. of Williamstown; a sister, Alice Godfrey of Williamstown; two grandchildren, and a step-grandson.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Graveside services with full military honors to celebrate the life of James E. Godfrey Sr. will be conducted Thursday at 11 in Eastlawn Cemetery by the Rev. Connie Ekback, pastor of White Oaks Congregational Church.
Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME for FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, will be Wednesday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the Williamstown American Legion through the funeral home.
Survivors include his daughter-in-law, Paula Godfrey; two grandchildren, James E. Godfrey III and Amber Godfrey; a step-grandson, Andrew Briggs; a nephew, Chuck Hunt, and three nieces, Sharon Wetheland, Dolores Kornn and Diane Hunt.
He was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Hunt.
