Joseph William "Bill" Widing Jr., 75, of 1611 Cold Spring Road died Saturday at Sweet Brook Care Centers after a long illness.

Born in Philadelphia on April 4, 1930, son of Joseph William Widing Sr. and Elizabeth Griscom Widing, he graduated from Episcopal Academy in Merion, Pa., and, in 1952, from Williams College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and served as managing editor of the Williams Record.

Mr. Widing held management positions in the pharmaceutical, steel and refractory industries. Much of his career was spent with Harbridge House Inc. of Boston.

He was involved with choral music, including performing in a festival of male choirs at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

He devoted his life to Christian community service, beginning in the 1940s as a missionary in western Montana and culminating in his tenure as a deacon at First Congregational Church in Duxbury.

He and his wife, the former Helen Chapman Judson, were married 52 years.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Laura Widing of Houston; three sons, Joseph William "Bill" Widing III of Reading, Pa., Bradway Widing of Kingston and Eric Widing of Ligonier, Pa., and nine grandchildren.
