John R. Murphy

June 05, 2001

John Richard Murphy, 52, of 23978 Circle Drive, Quail Valley, Calif., died Tuesday at home, following a long battle with cancer.

Born in Long Island, N.Y., on Aug. 26, 1948, son of Veronica Hickey Murphy, now of Williamstown, and the late John Thomas Murphy, he graduated from Wantagh High School on Long Island. He also attended Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.Y.

He was the owner and operator of his own semi-trailer trucking business for more than 30 years. Before retiring due to ill health, he was last employed with United Van Lines.

He was an avid gun collector and enjoyed model cars and fishing from his boat. He was a longtime fan of Mickey Mantle and the New York Yankees.

Besides his mother he leaves his wife, the former Cindy Sylvia; a daughter, Allison Murphy at home; a sister, Maureen Murphy Doborwicz of Williamstown; and two brothers, Ronald T. Murphy of Avon, Conn., and Terance J. Murphy of Clancy, Mont.

A memorial service will take place in St. Patrick's Church, Williamstown, at a later date. Private burial will take place in the family plot at Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Allison Murphy Education Fund or the American Cancer Society through the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA FUNERAL HOME, West Chapel, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.
