Sydelle Shapiro

Sydelle Shapiro, 78, of Sweetwood Continuing Care Community on Cold Spring Road, a former longtime resident of 81 Appleton Ave., Pittsfield, died Thursday night at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on July 15, 1927, daughter of Benjamin and Ida Schansinger Stone, she graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in 1944 and from Barnard College in 1948.

She received a doctorate in psychology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Mrs. Shapiro led the psychology department at Berkshire Community College for several years before taking up research positions, first with Foote, Cone and Belding in New York, then with ABT Associates in Boston. She also served 10 years as deputy commissioner of Social Services for New York state.

She owned and operated Stone's Throw Antiques in Lenox for 20 years, retiring in 2004.

She and her husband, Stanley Martin Shapiro, were married Feb. 4, 1951. He died June 19, 2003.

She leaves three sons, Mark Shapiro of Los Altos, Calif., Robert Shapiro of Pelham, N.Y. and Peter Shapiro of Walnut Creek, Calif.; a sister, Eleanor Kaplan of Pittsfield, and three grandsons.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Sydelle Stone Shapiro will be Sunday at 2 at Knesset Israel Synagogue on Colt Road, Pittsfield, with Rabbi David Greenspoon, spiritual leader, officiating.

Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery in the Temple Anshe Amunim section. Memorial contributions may be sent to either the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires or to the Mass MoCA Foundation in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 24 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.

The family will receive friends during Shiva at the home of Nathan and Eleanor Kaplan, 10 Taconic St., Pittsfield, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9, starting Sunday evening. She also leaves three grandsons, Benjamin, Joseph and Vincent, and daughters-in-law, Barbara Shapiro and Inez Sieben. Sydelle was a devoted wife, mother and sister. She lived a full and accomplished life. She was loved and admired, and she will be deeply missed.
