WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Phyllis Burghardt Avery, 88, of 225 Adams St., Brooklyn, N.Y., a former resident of Williamstown, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, at home.
Born in Bennington, Vt., on July 26, 1917, daughter of Sylvester and Helen Burghardt Douglass, she attended schools in Williamstown and graduated from the former Williamstown High School. She also attended business school.
Mrs. Avery was employed by Gaevert's in Williamstown before relocating to Brooklyn, when the company moved there. She was last employed by the Environmental Protection Agency in New York, retiring in 1982 with more than 30 years of service.
She also was employed by the Atomic Energy Commission for several years.
While in Williamstown, she attended St. John's Episcopal Church. She enjoyed the New York theater, especially opera and ballet, and was a member of her tenants' association and of its Garden Club. She also volunteered at Brooklyn Hospital and enjoyed traveling.
She and her husband, Wilfred W. Avery, were married May 30, 1954.
Besides her husband, she leaves two stepbrothers, Charles Douglass of East Hartford, Conn., and Jon Douglass of Brooklyn, with whom she resided, and several cousins.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Avery will be conducted Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006, at 1 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown by the Rev. Peter T. Elvin, rector.
Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main St., North Adams, Mass., will be tomorrow, Jan. 10, from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in care of the funeral home.
