Claire Menkel

Claire Menkel, 87, of Rockridge Retirement Community in Northampton, formerly of Williamstown, died Sunday at Cooley-Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.

Born in Ogdensburg, N.Y., on Oct. 20, 1918, daughter of W. Allan and Edith Judson Newell, she was a graduate of Emma Willard School in Troy, N.Y., and attended Vassar College.

She married Anthony Menkel in 1940. During her early married years, she worked at the Ogdensburg Journal and volunteered at Hepburn Hospital.

She and her husband moved to Michigan after World War II.

During her years in Michigan, Mrs. Menkel had leadership roles with the Easter Seals Society, the Cub Scouts and Brownies, and parent-teacher associations at various schools.

She retired to Williamstown in 1977, where she was involved with the Milne Public Library and the Community Chest.

Mrs. Menkel and her husband were the unofficial heads of the Williams College class of 1939, hosting many reunion and mini-reunion events. After her husband's death, she was voted an official member of the class and its vice president.

She spent summers in Chippewa Bay in the Thousand Islands on the St. Lawrence River in upstate New York and was a member of the Chippewa Bay Yacht Club. She enjoyed playing bridge.

Her husband died in 1994.

She leaves two sons, Anthony Menkel of Williamstown and Allan Menkel of Westhampton; two daughters, Lane Menkel of Hartford, Conn., and Margot Menkel of Westhampton, and nine grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Claire Menkel, who died Jan. 8, 2006, will be held Sunday, Jan. 15, at 2 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown. A reception will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to make donations to the American Red Cross, to the Milne Public Library, 1095 Main St., Williamstown, MA 01267, or to the Hammond Fire and Rescue Squad, 300 Lake St., Hammond, NY 13646.

She also leaves two sons-in-law, Mike Watt of Hartford, Conn., and Anthony Clarke of Westhampton; a daughter-in-law, Sally Menkel of Westhampton, and nine grandchildren, Maxwell and Margot of Williamstown, James, William and Sara Benet and her husband, Pedro Marquez, Zachary and Seth of Westhampton, and Alexander and Joshua, also of Westhampton.

Claire's children would like to thank the staff of Cooley-Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. CZELUSNIAK FUNERAL HOME in Northampton is in charge.
