Gertrude Mary "Peggy" Falvey Churchill

Gertrude Mary "Peggy" Falvey Churchill, 98, of 1096 North Hoosac Road died Saturday at Williamstown Commons.

Born in Clarendon, Vt., on May 13, 1907, daughter of Fred and Catherine McAllister Bump, she attended schools there and in Wallingford Vt., graduating from Wallingford High School in 1925.

She graduated from the University of Vermont with a teaching degree in 1928.

Mrs. Churchill taught school in Vermont until her marriage in 1931, when she moved to North Adams. She moved to Williamstown in 1933 and resumed her teaching career substituting for many years while raising her family.

She earned a second teaching degree from the former North Adams State College in 1961 and became a full-time teacher, first at Grant School and, later, at Broad Brook School. She retired in 1972.

She was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church, a member of the Williamstown Grange and the Massachusetts Retired Teachers Association, and a former member of the Mothers' Forum, the 4-H and the Massachusetts Teachers Association.

She enjoyed gardening and reading.

Her first husband, John Joseph Falvey, whom she married June 22, 1931, died Oct. 30, 1970.

Her husband, Ralph Winston Churchill, whom she married Oct. 21, 1978, died Sept. 25, 1995.

She leaves two daughters, Margaret Vernon of Gainesville, Fla., and Mary Hart of Boulder, Colo.; three sons, John Falvey Jr. of Boulder, Colo., James Falvey of Butte, Mont., and William Falvey of Boulder, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Joanne Sylvester and Susan Bernardi, both of Williamstown; a stepson, John Churchill of Williamstown; 21 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Helen Falvey, died in September 2000 and a son, James F. Falvey, died in September 1938.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Gertrude M. "Peggy" Falvey Churchill will be Thursday at 10:15 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPEL, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 at St. Patrick's Church in Williamstown.

Burial will be in Eastlawn Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 4 to 7. Donations in her name may be made to the House of Local History in care of the funeral home, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247.

She also leaves nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by six brothers and sisters.
