Rachel C. Daniels

Rachel C. Daniels, 84, of 813 Simonds Road died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital.

Born in Williamstown on May 8, 1921, daughter of J. Fred and Ruth C. Torry Cummings, she attended schools in Williamstown and graduated from the former Williamstown High School.

Mrs. Daniels was employed from 1953 to 1961 as a secretary by the former Williamstown Central School and then transferred in 1961 to Mount Greylock Regional High School, where she served as a secretary and later as the treasurer, retiring in September 2005.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Williamstown.

She was an active member of the Williamstown Friendship Club at the Harper Center, where she served as past secretary.

She enjoyed the outdoors and nature, including bird watching and hiking, and loved all animals, especially cats. She also enjoyed flower gardening.

Her first husband, James F. Daniels, whom she married Aug. 31, 1940, died Jan. 24, 1970.

Her second husband, Donald Bettis, also is deceased.

She leaves a son, Richard F. Daniels of Williamstown, with whom she made her home; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, James F. Daniels Jr., in 1995.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services to celebrate the life of Rachel C. Cummings Daniels, who died Feb. 1, 2006, will take place Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at 9:30 a.m. at the Sherman Burbank Memorial Chapel in Williamstown, with the Rev. Peter Daniels, pastor of First Baptist Church of Williamstown, officiating.

Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St., North Adams, are Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. Flowers may be sent or memorial donations are suggested to First Baptist Church of Williamstown or the American Diabetes Association through the funeral home.

Survivors include five grandchildren, Michael Daniels, Steven Daniels, Richard Daniels Jr., Tracy Skidmore and Suzanne Norcross, and two daughters-in-law, Marge Daniels and MaryAnn Dykeman.

She was predeceased by a son, James Daniels Jr., in 1995 and her twin sister, Ruth Bessette.
