Dorothy Hickey

Dorothy Hickey, 90, of Woodcock Road died yesterday at Crescent Manor Care Centers in Bennington, Vt.

A licensed nursing home administrator, Mrs. Hickey purchased the main house of the former Sweet Brook Farm in 1948 and established Sweet Brook Nursing Home. In 1968, she joined with local doctors and lawyers to build a new, 80-bed facility for her nursing home business on Cold Spring Road.

She served on the board of directors of Sweet Brook and oversaw multiple additions to the facility, the development of the building of Sweetwood Continuing Care Retirement Community, and the purchase and subsequent additions to Crescent Manor Care Centers in Bennington.

She was active in the business until the sale of Sweet Brook to Northern Berkshire Health Systems in 1999.

Born in Greenfield on May 13, 1915, daughter of Samuel P. and Minnie Harris Billings, she graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1933 and from New England Baptist School of Nursing in 1936.

Mrs. Hickey was also a registered nurse and did private duty nursing at New England Baptist.

She married James Walter Hickey in 1939 and moved to Williamstown in 1946. The couple were later divorced.

A button collector, she was a member of the button societies of New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut. She also enjoyed gardening.

She leaves a daughter, K. Elaine Neely of Williamstown, and two grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Dorothy Billings Hickey will be celebrated Tuesday, March 7, at 11 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown by the Rev. Peter Elvin, rector. Burial will follow in the family plot in Southlawn Cemetery, South Williamstown. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main St., North Adams, will be Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.

Floral tributes may be sent or memorial donations are suggested for the Crescent Manor Scholarship Fund, Crescent Manor Care Centers, 312 Crescent Boulevard, Bennington, VT 05201, or through the funeral home. Survivors include a son-in-law, Thomas W. Neely; a granddaughter, K. Brevard Neely; a grandson, Matthew P. Neely, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Francis Sidney Billings, George Morton Billings and Forrest Cowles Billings.
