Thomas Robert Sears

Thomas Robert Sears, 89, of 59 Champagne Ave., formerly of 422 Church St., North Adams, died yesterday afternoon at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he was taken after being stricken earlier in the day.

Born in North Adams on Sept. 27, 1916, son of John Robert and Delia Brodeur Sears, he attended schools in North Adams and was a 1934 graduate of St. Joseph's High School.

Mr. Sears was a former member of Company K, Massachusetts National Guard. He joined the Portsmouth Naval Yard in Portsmouth, N.H., where he worked for three years. He later spent two years working at Terminal Island Naval Yard in Long Beach, Calif.

Prior to World War II, he was employed for six years by the former James Hunter Machine Co. in North Adams. After the war, Mr. Sears returned to North Adams, where he resumed his career at James Hunter Machine Co. He was employed there until his retirement in 1983, after 43 years of service to the company.

After his retirement, he worked part-time as a custodian at Congregation Beth Israel in North Adams, until 1989.

He was a communicant of St. Francis' Church.

He was a member of the Northern Berkshire Retired Men's Club, and a former member of the Knights of Columbus, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Greylock Community Club. He enjoyed building puzzles.

He and his wife, the former Corinne Gladys Vanier, were married, Aug. 3, 1957. She died on Oct. 26, 1992.

Mr. Sears leaves two grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Joy Cleveland, who died Dec. 17, 1999, and a son, Stephen Allen Sears, who died Aug. 16, 1988.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Thomas Sears, who died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, will be celebrated Friday morning, April 21, 2006, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis' Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery.

Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS WEST CHAPELS will be Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Donations may be made to the St. Francis' Building Fund in care of the funeral home, 521 West Main St., North Adams.

He leaves his caregiver, Virginia Moses of Williamstown; two grandchildren, Debra DiNatale of Plainville, Conn., and William D. Cleveland Jr. of North Adams, and nieces and nephews. A sister, Mary Fallon, predeceased him.
