Melvin Band

Melvin Band, 58, of 290 Luce Road, longtime mathematics professor at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, died Tuesday at North Adams Regional Hospital after being stricken earlier in the day.
Born in Montreal on Oct. 20, 1942, son of Sam Band of Montreal and the late Esther Lerner Band, he attended schools there. He earned his bachelor of science degree in mathematics in 1963 and his master of science degree in mathematics in 1964, both from McGill University in Montreal. He received his doctorate in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge in 1968.
Prior to coming to MCLA, Mr. Band was assistant professor at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and a lecturer and postdoctoral fellow at the University of Manitoba in Winnepeg, Manitoba. He was also a lecturer at MIT.
He was appointed assistant professor in mathematics at MCLA, formerly North Adams State College, in August 1970, and was awarded tenure and promoted to associate professor in September 1972. He was promoted to professor in August 1977.
Mr. Band was chair of the mathematics department from 1974 to 1975 and from 1982 until the present. In addition, he was selected by his peers to serve as faculty marshall, leading and representing the Faculty Association during ceremonial occasions.
He was honored with the Distinguished Service Award in 1980 and 1984. He served as the chairperson of the Canadian Studies Committee and the All-College Committee, in addition to serving as a member of the Curriculum Committee and Athletic Council. He also served as treasurer and secretary of the Faculty Association, and was involved with the new student orientation program.
Mr. Band was a a member of Congregation Beth Israel in North Adams. He was a marathon runner and enjoyed hiking and swimming.
MCLA President Thomas D. Aceto commented, "This is indeed a sad day for Mel's family and the college. He was a very dear friend and colleague to all of us at MCLA. As we honor him, we will share the memories and relationships with Mel that will allow us to celebrate his life and his numerous contributions to the college and greater community. Our heartfelt sympathy goes to Mel's wife, Sharon, and their three children."
Besides his father, he leaves his wife, the former Sharon Granner, whom he married Aug. 23, 1965, in Montreal; three daughters, Lori Chasen of Longmeadow, Dr. Joanne Band of Seattle and Alison Band of West Springfield, and a brother, Bernard Band of Montreal.
Funeral Services will take place Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Congregation Beth Israel, 265 Church St., North Adams, with Rabbi Jeffrey Wolfson Goldwasser officiating. Burial will follow in Beth Israel Cemetery in Clarksburg. There are no calling hours. Private Shiva will be observed at the family residence, 290 Luce Road, Williamstown.
