John Benjamin Howland Sr.

John Benjamin Howland Sr., 80, of 21 Pine Lodge Park died Monday at North Adams Regional Hospital where he was admitted on Friday, June 30.

Born in Brandon, Vt. on June 14, 1926, son of Wendell R. and Elizabeth Gravel Howland, he attended schools there and came to North Adams as a teenager.

Mr. Howland was last employed by the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams for more than 25 years, retiring in 1987. Prior to that, he was employed by the former Brightwater Paper Co. Following his retirement, he worked as a security guard at Mass MoCA.

Mr. Howland was a member of the First Baptist Church in North Adams. In 1987, he was recognized as a 50-year member of the church.

Mr. Howland was proud of his heritage as a descendant of John Howland, who came to America on the Mayflower in 1620.

He enjoyed bowling, fishing, and playing cards. In his younger years, he operated a gun shop with a partner.

He and his wife, the former Mary Janice Jones, were married March 29, 1947. She died on July 1, 1995.

He leaves four sons, John Benjamin Howland Jr. of North Adams, Steven Bruce Howland of Florida, Wayne James Howland of North Adams, Kirk Clinton Howland of Williamstown, with whom he made his home; a sister, Lucretia Foley of Brushton, N.Y.; a brother, Richard Howland of Williamstown; 17 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Mary Elizabeth Baribeau, died June 1, 1994.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services to celebrate the life of John B. Howland Sr., who died Monday, July 17, 2006, will be held Friday, July 21, at 9 at the First Baptist Church in North Adams, with the Rev. David Anderson, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in the family lot in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, CENTRAL CHAPELS, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, are Thursday from 4 to 7.

Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home. He also leaves nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Howland.
