Mary W. Davis

Mary W. Davis, 85, formerly of 49 Jamieson Heights, died Saturday at Sweet Brook Care Centers, where she had resided since March 2005.
Born in Michigan, Ohio, on Aug. 17, 1920, daughter of Chester H. and Esther Archibald Williams, she grew up in Toledo, Ohio, and attended schools there.
She attended the University of Toledo and Eliot-Pearson School at Tufts University in Medford and earned her bachelor of science degree in education at the former North Adams State Teachers College, where she received a teaching certificate.
She lived in Peoria, Ill., before moving to Williamstown in 1952.
Mrs. Davis was a preschool, kindergarten, and first- and second-grade teacher. She taught at Pownal (Vt.) Elementary School and substituted in the Williamstown public schools. Before completing her teaching certificate, she taught at Pine Cobble School.
After retiring from teaching, she often filled in at the Little Red Schoolhouse and at Hancock Elementary School in Hancock. She also frequently read stories to young children at Williamstown schools and at the Williamstown Public library.
She was a longtime member of Second Congregational Church, where she sang in the choir, served in the Dorcas Society and participated in church events. She also read to children during the services' Children's Time.
She was a former member of the Sweet Adelines and a docent at the Clark Art Museum in Williamstown. She was also a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 28 years.
She enjoyed playing the piano, dancing, attending Broadway musicals, and making figures and crèches out of modeling clay.
She and her husband, Howard Albert Davis, were married Feb. 25, 1945. He died Feb. 5, 2005.
She leaves a son, Rodger Williams Davis of Williamstown; two daughters, Annie Davis Archambault of Plymouth and Margaret Alison Davis of Moscow, Idaho; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Memorial services for Mary W. Davis, who died July 21, 2006, will be conducted Saturday at 10 at Second Congregational Church, 81 Hancock Road, Williamstown, by the Rev. Penny Rich Smith, pastor. Burial will be in Southlawn Cemetery, Williamstown, after the service.
There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Second Congregational Church through Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Funeral Home, WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St. North Adams.
She leaves a son-in-law, Larry Wisocki of Moscow, Idaho; three grandchildren, Bree Archambault of Watertown, Bear Archambault of Onset and Leslie Wisocki of Moscow; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Kennedy of Athol, Idaho, and Marion Davis of Bethesda, Md.; a nephew, Richard Davis of Ashton, Md.; a great-niece, Libby Davis; a great-nephew, Chris Davis; and her former son-in-law, Jack Archambault of Onset.
A grateful member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 28 years, she leaves behind many valued friends in that program. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
