Nancy Hart Markgraf

Nancy Hart Markgraf, 72, of 104 Forest Road, died at North Adams Regional Hospital on Saturday.

Born in West Cornwall, Conn., on March 12, 1934, daughter of C. Whittelsey and Doris Shurtleff Hart, she was a 1952 graduate of Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

She received an R.N. degree from Columbia University School of Nursing, a bachelor's degree from State University of New York at Albany, and a master's degree in public health from the University of California at Berkeley.

She was assistant director of the Visiting Nurse Association of the Berkshires, from which she retired in 1997. Prior to that she served as the Director of the Williamstown Visiting Nurse Association and as an administrator for Medical Personnel Pool in Raleigh, N.C. In her earlier years, she was employed as a staff nurse at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York, Children's Hospital in Cincinnati, and Alta Bates Medical Center in Berkeley, Calif.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Williamstown, where she served on several of its boards and committees and as clerk of the congregation.

She was a long-term volunteer at the Women's Exchange, and was serving as the president of its advisory board at the time of her death. She was a SHINE volunteer, providing counsel and assistance on government and private insurance plans. She also served as a volunteer case reviewer for the foster care programs in Berkshire County for the Massachusetts Department of Social Services.

She leaves her husband of 49 years, J. Hodge Markgraf of Williamstown.

In addition to her husband, she leaves two daughters, Sarah Markgraf and of Hackensack, N.J., and Carrie Blum of Byram, N.J.; a sister, Priscilla Mauro of West Cornwall, Conn.; five brothers, Philip and Raymond Hart, both of West Cornwall, Conn., Nathan Hart of Bridgewater, N.J., Alden Hart of Greenville, N.C., and Daniel Hart of Cotuit; and one grandson.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service to celebrate the life of Nancy Hart Markgraf, who died on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006, at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, Williamstown. A reception will follow.

Burial will be private. For those wishing to make memorial gifts, the family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be directed to the First Congregational Church Music Fund or the Columbia University School of Nursing through Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two sons-in-law, Gregg Biermann (Sarah) and Philip Blum; and a grandson, Justin Blum. She was predeceased by a sixth brother, Norman Hart.
