Norris Anthony Phelps Sr.

Norris Anthony Phelps Sr., 86, of 207 Woodcock Road died yesterday at the home of his son, Peter David Phelps, of 580 Oblong Road.
He served three terms on the Board of Selectmen and was its chairman in 1962 and was a member of the Town Planning Board and the School Building Committee.
Born on Torrey Woods Road on Sept. 19, 1920, son of Frederick H. and Ruth Baker Phelps, he graduated from the former Williamstown High School in 1937 and attended Purdue University School of Agriculture.
In 1939, Mr. Phelps returned to Williamstown to operate the family farm on Sloan Road and to care for his mother and sister. He began his farming career with 28 cows on 77 acres. Over the years, he purchased several contiguous farms and merged them with his property on Woodcock and Oblong roads. At one time, he was the second-largest landowner, with 985 acres of farmland. From 1951 to 1953, he also was foreman of the Double V Ranch in Englewood, Fla. Following his retirement in 1989, he spent winters in Winter Haven, Fla.
He was a 36-year trustee of Williamstown Savings Bank.
He and his wife, the former Betty-Jim Carpenter, were married Nov. 15, 1944, at her home in Bennington, Vt. She died Feb. 9, 2004.
Besides his son, he leaves two daughters Michael Hall Axt and Leslie Mary Phelps, both of Williamstown; another son, Frederick Harry Phelps of Williamstown; a sister, Carol Schiff of Forest Hills, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Another son, Norris Anthony Phelps Jr., died in 1951.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The family of Norris A. Phelps Sr. will receive friends Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, at 2:30 at the home of Peter Phelps at 580 Oblong Road in Williamstown, Mass.
Private burial will take place in the family lot in Southlawn Cemetery in Williamstown. Memorial contributions may be made to VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire or to Shriners' Children's Hospital, both in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.
He was predeceased by a son, Norris Anthony Phelps Jr., in 1951, by his brother, Douglas Phelps, and by a sister, Dorothy Phelps.
