Ruth Laidlaw

Ruth Laidlaw, 96, of Sweetwood, 1611 Cold Spring Road, died Friday at home.

Born in Dedham, on Oct. 16, 1910, daughter of Francis W. and Ruth Hayes Welch, she attended schools in New York City and graduated from the Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Conn.

She moved to Williamstown in 1998.

During World War II, she was a gray lady at a hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Mrs. Laidlaw's husband, David K. Laidlaw, whom she married June 12, 1931, was an admiral in the Royal Canadian Navy, and she traveled with him while he was stationed in various parts of Canada. At one time, they lived in Ottawa while he was Chief of Staff of the Royal Navy. She and her husband settled in Maine; after his 1995 death, she relocated to Sweetwood.

She operated a bookstore in Bedford Hills, N.Y., for several years. She also founded the Bedford Crafts Guild.

She was a member of St. Matthew's Church in Bedford, N.Y., and while in Williamstown, attended St. John's Church.

She enjoyed playing tennis and won several championships. She also enjoyed horseback riding. She was a founder-member of Bedford Golf & Tennis Club in Bedford, N.Y.

She leaves three sons, Francis W. Laidlaw of Henniker, N.H., and Housatonic, Robert S. Laidlaw of Groton Long Point, Conn., and Douglas B. Laidlaw of North Plainfield, N.J.; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. A son, David Laidlaw, is deceased.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service to celebrate the life of Ruth Laidlaw, who died Friday, Oct. 20, 2006, will be held at a later date in St. Matthew's Church in Bedford, N.Y.

Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.

She also leaves 12 grandchildren, including Chriss Laidlaw of Williamstown, Annie Selke of Pittsfield, and William C. Laidlaw of Housatonic. Two brothers are also deceased.
