William Edward Danaher Jr.

William Edward Danaher Jr., 78, of 37 Main St. died Wednesday at Williamstown Commons.

Born in Williamstown on Feb. 19, 1928, son of William E. Danaher Sr. and Helen Wandrei Danaher, he was a 1947 graduate of the former Williamstown High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball.

He formerly held the school's single-game basketball record of 35 points and its all-time scoring record. In 1955, he was drafted by the former Milwaukee Braves and was a pitcher for two years.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was discharged as a private first class. He played for the Army baseball team at Camp Rutger in Alabama.

Following his military career, Mr. Danaher returned to Williamstown, where he was employed for many years as manager of the admissions and parking departments at the former Green Mountain Race Track in Pownal, Vt. He retired when the track ceased operations.

For more than 30 years, he was a coach, first at Williamstown Elementary School and then at Mount Greylock Regional High School, where he was led the junior varsity and varsity baseball and basketball teams. He retired in 1992. He also coached Babe Ruth and American Legion baseball.

He was a communicant of St. Patrick's-St. Raphael's Parish and a member of American Legion Post 152 and Waubeeka Golf Links.

He leaves two sisters, Dorothy DeMarco of Pownal and Mary A. Danaher of Howes Cave, N.Y.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for William E. Danaher Jr., who died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, will be Tuesday at 10:15 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main St., North Adams, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Patrick's Church in Williamstown.

Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Monday from 4 to 7. Memorial donations are suggested for Village Ambulance through the funeral home.

He also leaves a brother-in-law, John; a niece, Mary Anne Ponti; and two grandnephews, Nicholas Danaher Ponti and John Michael Ponti.
