Paula Murphy

Paula Murphy, 75, of 66 Northwest Hill Road died Saturday at home.
Born in Quincy on Sept. 25, 1931, daughter of Walter and Mary Twomey Keating, she was a 1949 graduate of Mount St. Joseph's Academy in Brighton and earned her bachelor of science degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1953.
Mrs. Murphy co-founded the Paperback Exchange in Essex Junction, Vt. She opened a second store in Bennington shortly after moving to Williamstown in April 1983. She coordinated the first literacy program at the Williamstown Library and later tutored children and adults in English as a Second Language. She also volunteered at Recording for the Blind.
She was a communicant of St. Patrick and St. Raphael parishes, where she served on the parish council and was a church greeter, and a member of Taconic Golf Club. She she made a hole in one at Bonita Fairways in Florida.
She also enjoyed paddle tennis, downhill skiing and bowling.
She and her husband, Jack Murphy, were married in 1953. He died in 1985.
She leaves four daughters, Kerry Studwell of Georgetown, Texas, Christine Sumner of Colchester, Vt., Ellen Murphy of Westford and Clare Olesen of Unionville, Conn.; two sons, Timothy Murphy of Philadelphia and Thomas Murphy of Tinton Falls, N.J.; two brothers, Geoffrey Keating and Brian Keating; and 11 grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Paula Keating Murphy, who died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006, will be celebrated Saturday at 11 at St. Patrick's Church in Williamstown.
Burial will take place at a later date in the Keating family plot at Mount Wollaston Cemetery, Quincy. Calling hours will be Friday from 4 to 7 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main St., North Adams. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire, 535 Curran Highway, North Adams, MA 01247, or to St. Patrick's Church, 53 Southworth St., Williamstown, or through the funeral home.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Edward Keating and Gregory Keating, and by two sisters, Maura Conley and Lee Roach. Paula married Jack Murphy in 1953 and raised six children while residing in various locations throughout the East Coast. She loved books and reading and this love inspired much of what she accomplished during her life. She also loved being physically active.
