MacAlister Brown

MacAlister Brown, 82, of 57 Sabin Drive died early Tuesday morning, Nov. 21, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, Vt.

Born in Newton on July 7, 1924, a son of Clifford K. and Marion McAllister Brown, he attended schools in Wellesley and graduated from Deerfield Academy. He graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., completing its V-12 program for World War II veterans.

Mr. Brown was a veteran of World War II and served in the Navy in the Asiatic-Pacific theater of operations as a lieutenant sonar man on the USS Herbert Thomas from Jan. 1, 1943, until his honorable discharge on Sept. 14, 1946.

Following his military service, he completed a doctoral program at Harvard University. He also spent a year of study at the Institute des Hautes Etudes in Geneva, where he won a peace prize. He later worked in Munich, Germany, in a program for displaced persons.

Mr. Brown was the Farleigh S. Dickinson Jr. professor of political science, emeritus, at Williams College. He retired from active teaching in 1994 after 38 years of teaching political science with a specialty in international relations in Southeast Asia. He also was the chairman of the political economy program at Williams for many years.

He received several Fulbright Scholarships, which allowed him to teach at the Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 1968-69. He also taught at the Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1980 and 1984. He was the director of the Smith College Junior Year Abroad Program in Geneva in 1973-74.

Before coming to Williams, he taught for two years at Dartmouth College.

Mr. Brown was a member of the First Congregational Church in Williamstown.

Active in civic affairs, he was a member of the Town Finance Committee and was a member and former chairman of the Mount Greylock High School Committee.

He was also a trustee of the Williamstown Public Library.

Mr. Brown enjoyed playing squash and was a nationally ranked master squash player. He also enjoyed painting watercolors and singing as a member of the Berkshire Chorale.

He leaves his wife, the former Adriana H. Millenaar, whom he married on Sept. 3, 1967, in Williamstown.

He also leaves a daughter, Laura MacAlister Brown of Nederland, Colo.; two sons, John Brown of Stow and Andrew Brown of North Adams; and four grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Knowlton Brown.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service to celebrate the life of MacAlister Brown, who died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, will be held at Saturday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. at Thompson Memorial Chapel on the campus of Williams College. Private burial will take place in the Williams College Cemetery.

He also leaves a son-in-law, Rob Ramey; a daughter-in-law, Gervaise; and four granddaughters, Sarah and Elissa Brown of Stow and Eva and Anika Ramey of Nederland, Colo.
