Helen Vallencourt

Helen Vallencourt, 76, died Saturday in Steubenville, Ohio, following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Born Dec. 19, 1929, in Paris, daughter of Quintard and Sally Rayen Leake, she relocated to Williamstown after her father's death in 1930. Her mother subsequently married Orie William Long, who formally adopted Mrs. Vallencourt in 1936.

She was educated in Willliamstown schools and Abbot Academy, and was a member of the first graduating class of Pine Cobble School in 1947. She received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Wheelock College in Boston.

Mrs. Vallencourt and her family moved to Dingman's Ferry, Pa., in 1962 and then Milford, Pa., in 1963. They lived there until 1990, and she moved back to Williamstown in 1994.

Mrs. Vallencourt taught elementary school in Ridgewood, N.J., Milford, Pa., and Sussex, N.J., retiring in 1989.

She was a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown and an active member of the Williams Faculty Club and Friday Club.

She was an active volunteer, serving at the Williamstown Information Booth, The Clark Art Museum, Sweetbrook Nursing Center, Berkshire Hospice, and the Festival Theatre. An amateur photographer in her later years, she enjoyed taking her camera on long walks in the country.

She leaves a daughter, Sally Gruehr D'Anniballe of Steubenville, Ohio; a son, Jonathan Gruehr of Milford, Pa.; a sister, Mary Long Hartsfield of Los Angeles; three grandchildren; a niece; and nephew.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Helen Long Vallencourt, who died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, will be held in the spring at St. John's Church, Williamstown. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Church or Pine Cobble School, both in Williamstown, or Second Chance Animal Shelter in Shaftsbury, Vt., in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.

She leaves behind three grandchildren, Julie, Alan and Neil D'Anniballe of Steubenville, Ohio; a niece, Melanie Weaver of Los Angeles; and a nephew, Matthew Weaver of Los Angeles.

She was predeceased by her parents and a son, Anotole Gruehr. She was a traveler, lover of nature and animals, especially Siamese cats.
