Rev. Sinclair D. Hart, 84

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. —The Rev. Sinclair Danforth Hart, 84, of 260 South St. died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at Sweet Brook Care Centers.

Born in Albany, N.Y., on Oct. 8, 1922, son of William C. and Marjorie Talman Sinclair Hart, he attended Darrow School in New Lebanon, N.Y. He graduated from Williams College in 1944 and received a master of divinity degree from Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 287th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3rd Army, in England, France and Austria.

The Rev. Hart was ordained at St. John's Church on June 6, 1953. He was curate at All Saints Church in Worcester, vicar at Trinity Church in Shrewsbury, and rector of Grace Church in Salem and, from 1970 to 1985, of Grace Church in North Attleboro, during which time he was president of the Standing Committee for the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. After retiring to Williamstown, he served as interim priest at St. Luke's Church in Lanesborough and at St. John's.

He was active in the Civil Rights Movement and marched with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in Montgomery, Ala., in 1964.

He was a former president of the Williams College Sideline Quarterback Club and a board member of the Williams Hoop Group. He was an agent for the college alumni fund and served as secretary for the class of 1944 from 1986 to 2004. The college awarded him the Thurston Cup for his loyalty and participation in many alumni activities.

He was a former trustee of Sturdy Memorial Hospital and of Darrow School. He also served as a member of A Better Chance, the Turner House, the Visiting Nurse Association of North Berkshire and the Mental Health and Retardation boards. In 2003, he was awarded the Citizenship Trophy by the Williamstown Community Chest.

He and his wife, the former Nancy Wagner, were married 51 years.

Besides his wife, he leaves four daughters, Susan Hart Smith and her husband, Matthew, of Croton on Hudson, N.Y., Elizabeth Gardiner Hart of North Adams, Sally Hart Petersen and her husband, Timothy, of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Julie Danforth Hart of Boston; and four grandchildren, Amanda Danforth Smith, Allison Brady Smith, Jack Sinclair Petersen and Jane Danforth Petersen.

He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Hooker Hart, on Aug. 20, 2001.

FUNERAL NOTICE — Memorial services to celebrate the life of the Rev. Hart will be Saturday, Feb. 3, at a time to be announced, at St. John's Church in Williamstown. Private burial will take place in Westlawn Cemetery in Williamstown.

There will be no calling hours. The family requests that flowers and donations be omitted. FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPEL, North Adams, is in charge of arrangements.
