Harry Wellington Brown

Harry Wellington Brown, 75, of 140 Riverside Drive died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, where he was admitted on Dec. 27.

Born in Stratford, N.H., on Nov. 2, 1931, son of Earl and Albertina Mason Brown, he attended schools in North Stratford, N.H., and graduated from North Stratford High School with the class of 1949. While in high school, he played basketball and baseball.

Mr. Brown was a Army veteran of the Korean War, serving as a paratrooper with Company 1, 5th Infantry Regiment, 5th Regimental Combat Team from Feb. 23, 1951, until his honorable discharge on Feb. 11, 1954, with the rank of sergeant first class. For his service, he received the Combat Infantry Badge and the Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Service Star among his decorations.

Mr. Brown was employed by General Electric Co. in Pittsfield as a foreman in its ordnance division for 24 years, retiring in 1990. Previously, he was employed by Seabrook Power Co. installing high-tension wires throughout northern New England. He also worked at Cascade Paper Co. in North Adams and the North Adams Regional Hospital for several years.

He moved to North Adams in 1960 and to Williamstown in 1995.

He enjoyed bird-watching and helping his neighbors in the Spruces Mobile Home Park.

He and his wife, the former Beverly Carver, were married June 16, 1956, in Groveton, N.H.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Cindy L. Palmer of Bennington, Vt., and Sue A. O'Neil of North Adams; two sons, James T. Brown of East Pointe, Mich., and Dale R. Brown of Middletown, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- Private burial services for Harry Brown, who died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, will be held at the family plot in North Stratford (N.H.) Cemetery. There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Eastlawn Cemetery in Williamstown.

Memorial contributions may be made to Williamstown American Legion in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, CENTRAL CHAPELS, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, which is in charge of arrangements.

He also leaves two sons-in-law, William Burfeind and Bruce O'Neil; a daughter-in-law, Sally; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Palmer of Williamstown, Christina Brown of Walnut Creek, Calif., Jason Brown of Sonoma, Calif.; Kayla Perras, Joshua O'Neil and Kari O'Neil of North Adams and Vanessa O'Neil of Adams; two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Isaac Palmer of Waterford, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Five brothers and two sisters are deceased: Stanley, Bradley, Paul "Bud," Larry and Keith Brown, and Ruth Prince and Marilyn "Mae" Parker. He enjoyed spending time with his family and summers at Windsor Lake with his best friends Maurice and Shirley MacDow and family.
