Dr. Robert D. Henderson

January 12, 2007

Dr. Robert D. Henderson, 85, formerly of Simonds Road, died Friday at Sweetbrook Care Center, where he had resided since November 1999.

Born on his family's Penn-York farm in Winterdale, Pa., on June 22, 1921, he was the son of Elmer E. and Elizabeth Magenis Henderson. He attended the Scott Center, a one-room schoolhouse. He later graduated from the Hancock Central School with the class of 1940. While in high school, he was a track athlete and was unbeaten at the mile run in two years of competition.

He then attended St. Jon's University in New York City for his pre-veterinary studies. He graduated from Middlesex University in Waltham in December 1944 with his doctor of veterinary medicine degree.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving from January 1946 with the 313th medical battalion in Italy. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

Upon graduation from college, he began working at a veterinary practice in North Adams. He left briefly when he began active duty, but returned after his discharge. He later opened his own clinic at his residence on Simonds Road. He also was an employee of the town of Williamstown in the health department for many years. He retired and closed his practice on Jan. 1, 1993, due to ill health.

He enjoyed bird watching, travel, gardening and train rides.

He and his wife, the former Marion B. Jennings, were married Nov. 19, 1949 in Williamstown. She died Sept. 11, 2005.

Dr. Henderson leaves a daughter, Martha Henderson of Adams and a brother, William H. Henderson of New York.
