Gertrude Russel Doughty Swartz

Gertrude Russel Doughty Swartz, 92, of 220 South St., formerly of Gladwyne, Pa., died Sunday at home.

Born in Detroit, Mich., on Dec. 13, 1914, daughter of E. Crosby Doughty and Gertrude Rutgers Russel Doughty, she was raised in Williamstown on Hoxsey Street and The Knolls, formerly the Doughty estate.

She graduated from Concord Academy in 1932 and Bennington College in 1936. She later completed graduate courses in art history and geology at Williams College.

Mrs. Swartz was a homemaker.

She was formerly married to the late John H. Swartz in 1939.

She resided in Gladwyne for 60 years before returning in 1998 to her home, Fairway, located on the Taconic Golf Course.

Mrs. Swartz was an environmentalist, a naturalist and a lover of animals.

She leaves her two sons, J. Crosby Swartz of Oxnard, Calif., and John H. Swartz Jr. of Breckenridge, Colo.; and two granddaughters.

FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial gathering to celebrate the life of Gertrude Swartz, who died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2007, will be held in the family lot in Westlawn Cemetery in Williamstown on Tuesday,Feb. 20, at 10 a.m.

There are no calling hours. FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS CENTRAL CHAPEL at 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Swartz also leaves two granddaughters, Devon Swartz and Durban Swartz of Breckenridge, Colo. A brother, Edward "Ned" Crosby Doughty Jr., died in 1970.
