Henry Alfred Nichols, 85, of 136 Sand Springs Road, died yesterday at Sweet Brook Health Care Centers.
Born in Williamstown on April 6, 1921, son of Henry R. and Ethel Moore Nichols, he graduated from the former Williamstown High School and from Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a corporal in the medical division. He received many campaign medals.
Mr. Nichols owned and operated Ric-Mar Sales Co., retiring in 1986. Before that, he was employed by the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams and by the former Cornish Wire Co. After his retirement he worked part time at the former Green Mountain Race Track in Pownal, Vt.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, of George L. Curran Post 996 Veterans of Foreign Wars in North Adams and of the Pownal American Legion. He also was a mason.
He and his wife, the former Emina M. Plankey, were married Sept. 9, 1949, at St. John's Church. She died Sept. 27, 2005.
He leaves a daughter, Marta Nichols of North Adams, and a son, Richard Nichols of Adams.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral to celebrate the life of Henry Alfred Nichols, who died Friday, March 30, 2007, will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 11 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown by the Rev. Peter Elvin, rector. Burial with military honors will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Memorial donations are suggested for the North Adams Animal Shelter through the funeral home. Mr. Nichols also leaves his loving cat Putt-Putt.
